What is Metric Paper?

Metric paper or “A” size paper has almost magical properties. It is has the amazing unique as it is the only rectangle which when folded in half creates a similar rectangle.

If we start with a sheet of A4 paper we can create a family of similar rectangles from “A” size paper by folding and cutting in half.  Each new rectangle is also an “A” rectangle; first comes A5, then A6, then A7 and so on.

If we put two A4 sheets together we create an A3 rectangle. 4 sheets give us A2, 8 sheets A2 and16 sheets of A4 make an A1 rectangle. And an A0 rectangle has an area of 1 square metre!
