With a Scale factor of 3 the filled triangle looks like this and it is easy to see that it takes 6 of the smaller triangles to build it.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

This is true for all of the enlargements Scale Factor 3.

 

If the scale factor is 4 then it takes 10 of the smaller shapes to build the larger.

 

The general relationship is that the number of smaller shapes N = S ( S + 1 )/2

where S is the Scale factor
